Cantata for alto, soli, four-part mixed choir and orchestra (15′), (C. Misch)
Instrumentation: strings, 2.2.2.-2.2.0.0, timp

The concern to present Job’s sufferings as a test of faith is dramatically and expressively composed. The symmetrical structure (chorus, alto rec., trio, alto rec., chorus) may even be interpreted symbolically, and the question “What is man?” repeated in melodic-harmonic change in the first chorus as a symbolic search for an answer. The recitative and arioso provide for 4 solo voices. A choral performance is also possible.
