Edited by Ann Willison Lemke
Songs by women composers to texts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This edition documents the presence that the poet had for many of his female contemporaries. Selected are works written during Goethe’s lifetime in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The veneration with which he was met is reflected in different ways: in the rapturousness of Bettine, the highly artistic sophistication of Fanny Hensel, Clara Schumann or Josephine Lang, or the spontaneous freshness of Johanna Kinkel. The spectrum also includes the simple songs of Louise Reichardt and Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. From the Weimar environment, Duchess Anna Amalia of Saxe-Weimar and Corona Schröter are included with Singspiel compositions. Individual titles by lesser-known female composers such as Hélène Liebmann and Jeannette Bürde round out the collection. The edition is edited by literature and musicologist Ann Willison Lemke and features a number of first publications. Also suitable as teaching literature. Level of difficulty: easy to moderately difficult.
