Lobgesang (1831) „Meine Seele ist stille“

Cantata for soprano, alto, four-part mixed choir and orchestra (20′)
(Conrad Misch), Instrumentation: 2.2.2., Strings

First publication

The cantata, whose content refers to the birth of man, was composed one year after the birth of the son Sebastian. The formal sequence (pastorale, chorus, rec., aria, chorus) is based on the structure of a Bach cantata, with the difference that a large chorale fugue at the end forms the most extensive movement of the work. The soprano aria “O dass ich tausend Zungen hätte” can be considered the “centerpiece.” Here the translation of Bach’s model into the Romantic tonal language becomes particularly clear.
